In the Living Art: Rap Cypher

By: Jen Gata and Jermaine Murray

In hip-hop lies a culture expressed through a variety of art forms including Djing, emceeing, break dancing, and graffiti.  Emerge Magazine explores the world of hip-hop by taking it back to the days when the sound of rap music first hit the streets in the early 80’s, with a traditional rap cypher.  Within the hip-hop community a rap cypher is known to be a gathering of rappers who participate in a jam session and recite their own verses.  Emerge multimeida host Jen Gata and reporter Jermaine Murray searched around the GTA to find up and coming emcees that have a fresh flow, clever lyrics, and own creative style.  They found four rappers: Brandon Dramatic, Schooly, Richey Lynch, and Chris Brooks who gave Emerge their best verses in the rap cypher.
